This is an interesting animal- I desperately want to like this, but it's got some serious warts.The art is just phenomenal. It's all Ralph McQuarrie-inspired, futuristic chrome-and-steel madness, like the Jet Age went into space to have wars forever. The characters are realistically drawn, and it's always a moment of happiness when you can pick out the prototype of some familiar Star Wars vehicle, like a Y-Wing or Trade Federation tank.Also, it's great to see how this mess (see below) grew to become the series we've all grown to know and love. Seeing the themes, ideas, and events in their larval form and imagining the creative process that got them to the point where they're palatable was a real treat.The story is. . . well, there are words, and they make some sentences. It's readily apparent to me that if George Lucas would have had the chance to make this into a movie word for word, we'd not have Star Wars as a cultural institution. It's just all over the place. The characters fall in love or become best friends seemingly within hours of meeting one another. I'm not certain why some characters were even included. In some ways, it feels like stories I would make up on lazy Friday nights with my action figures as a child- messy, long, confusing, and rife with chances to include as many toys as possible. If it's true to the script, George Lucas also does a lousy job of world-building. We simply get told that the Jedi and the Sith are rival warrior tribes, and nothing else. However, they come off as having as significant a difference as Coke and Pepsi. Nothing ever gets explained or fleshed out, just more stuff gets shoveled on top of it- it's everything that was wrong with the Prequel trilogy, and then some. The suspension of disbelief it requires borders on the absurd. Thank goodness that George Lucas wasn't allowed to film his first draft. Based on a rough draft of Star Wars you see elements from the original and prequel trilogies showing that Lucas had characters and scenes from the very beginning. This version also shows the very stilted dialogue that Lucas is also know for.In this version Han Solo is a green creature.Chewie isn't connected to Solo, and has to be taught to fly.Darth Vader isn't a Sith.The Sith is named Valorum.And in this version Chewie gets his medal at the end.
