I've devoured every book in the Crossbreed series and this one was no different. I've enjoyed the last two books but it was great to see Raven and the Keystone crew get back to their roots and out solving a gritty crime in the Breed world. Viktor puts Raven into the eye of the storm when she's placed undercover to investigate an underground fighting ring after a few bodies of Breed have turned up dumped. And you know the first rule about any fight club...I'll show myself out. She's separated from her delicious partner in and out of work, Christian, and working in a fantasy sex club for Breed. The deeper Raven digs in, the more convoluted and dangerous the illegal fighting ring seems to go - literally to the death. The plot was fresh, intriguing and had all the bits and pieces I love about this series. More on that below.Book Nine picks up about a year after Raven has joined Keystone, which honestly just seemed unreal to me, probably because I've reread these books so much it feels like it's been longer than that in the Crossbreed world. The books starts with two of my favourite characters: Christian and Crush. I adore the love to hate dynamic between these two and the latter as a secondary character adds so much to this series and Raven's character. While more ingrained in the Breed world, Raven is still trying to juggle immortality with who she is and I love the realism that the secondary characters surrounding her add to this. There's the usual and much appreciated sarcasm throughout the book and on the heavy side from Raven and Christian and the Keystone crew show up throughout to add their unique flair to the story line. I liked that Raven and Christian were the main point of views for this book because even though I love the other characters, these two are the reason I read the books. There wasn't a lot of Niko and Gem which was fine due to Book Eight giving them their chance to shine. And, as always, Hunter remains a firm favourite of mine. I generally don't like kids in books, but his interactions with Shepherd are always such a highlight and it's a welcome addition.Christian and Raven's relationship continues to build and he's possessively dedicated to her - it's hot as and I'm Silence of the Lambs, crawl into their skin kind of obsessed with the pair of them. There are a few great, intense scenes between the two and I was so happy the the presence of Lenore the...not so nice lady didn't go the predictable route and throw up too much over the top relationship shade between them. My favourite part, however? Houdini pops back up in a fairly decent chunk of the book. Houdini - I"m just saying his name again because it gives me all kinds of shivers and is right up there with whispering 'Mufasa'. I flipping love this character and what he adds to the books. I saw a review state they were over this angle being included in the series - mate, jump off this train, then, because Houdini needs to stay and I seriously question your sanity and drug habits if you think this story line should be done with. He is diabolical and all kinds of wonderful and I think the books would be the lesser for him not being included, my personal obsession aside.Poe manages to pull out some great lines on love directed Raven's way, which was all kinds of gooey deliciousness. There's also a bit more of a reveal on Claude's background. Lenore continues to make a variety of trouble, enough to make the reader want to scratch her eyes out as she tries to divide Christian and Raven. For Mageri fans, there are a couple of subtle and brief innuendos to significant characters from that series, and yes, I did squeal a little in a very undignified way. Sorry, not sorry. Without spoiling anything, the book takes a right curve towards the end of the book that comes out of nowhere, leaving an almost cliffhanger that's sure to be continued in future books.Overall, this is another great book in one of my favourite series. Loved it - this was solid Keystone. Five stars. This book is lacking in several areas and plots are getting too eroded. Christian and Raven are not communicating as they should yet 9 books in they keep talking about honesty. Christian doesn't just tell Viktor about what Lenore did to him? Why not? They keep talking about how much they are a family but Raven goes missing at the end and no one is worried, even after finding her in the casket? Then C lying to R about who put her in the casket? Raven keeps just accepting memory wipes like its no big deal. I think that the character holes are getting too much and the series is just dragging on with no real development or purpose.
